About Me
"One size does not fit everyone so I match the type of therapy to what might help you most."
Dr Stuart Baker, DCPsych, CPsychol, AFBPsS, MBA
I practice as an adult Psychologist, Psychotherapist and transformational Coach.
I am a registered Chartered Psychologist & Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS), accredited Psychotherapist (UKCP), accredited CBT therapist (BABCP), Mindfulness Teacher and accredited EMDR Trauma therapist.
As an integrative therapist I do not believe one single approach works for all client; in collaboration with you I aim to formulate the best treatment approach to best match your needs and preferences, creating an individualised approach, which draws on and blends a range of evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches.
My Experience
I have many years experience working as a psychologist, coach and mindfulness trainer across a wide range of clients, in short-term and longer-term contexts, including NHS mental health and health psychology roles, the voluntary sector, commercial organisations and private practice.
I have a particular specialism in mindfulness and mind training, which I incorporate in both my work with individual clients and corporates as a Senior Consultant with Potential Project, the global leader in 'Corporate Based Mind Training’ and organisational development.
I still maintain a role as a Specialist Clinical Health Psychologist in Kingston Hospital as well as running an independent practice in West London. I also specialise in health and developmental trauma using EMDR Trauma therapy.
Prior to becoming a psychologist I qualified as an economist and later took an Executive MBA. I spent 20 years working in large corporates in the advertising, publishing, banking and insurance sectors, across a wide range of senior management roles, including relationship management, marketing, corporate strategy, organisational development and consulting. Having studied and worked internationally I have an awareness of and open to working with a wide range of cultures.
With this experience my core client group in private practice is professionals from a diverse range of sectors and nationalities.
What I Offer
Psychotherapy
“I am optimistic that personal change is possible and usually occurs through changing our relation to others and ourselves. Sometimes the best way to change is to really understand where we are in the here and now and be curious about this before real change can occur.”
Whether you are experiencing a crisis, feel depressed, anxious or simply wanting to live a more fulfilling life I can help you explore these and other challenges. My clients come to me because they want to talk in a confidential, welcoming and safe environment, to an experienced and qualified professional.
Therapy is a journey of self-discovery that we engage in together and I will support you to reflect and understand yourself better to increase your well-being and to find more helpful ways of dealing with life’s challenges. I understand that it can be really difficult to talk at times, therefore you can expect me to listen carefully with warmth and empathy.
At the core of my therapeutic work is establishing a therapeutic relationship. I offer a warm and secure space in comfortable surroundings where your concerns, feelings and thoughts can be brought, listened to and explored to help you find what you need. Above all I work collaboratively and relationally, using a flexible approach, so that together we can work towards you having a better understanding of yourself, develop increased well-being and resilience.
Mind Training & Mindfulness
Mindfulness as a resource for personal & professional transformation
I teach a practical set of straightforward tools and techniques that anyone can learn. Simple yet powerful practices based on mindful awareness – underpinned by the latest psychological and neuroscientific research. The practices I teach connect deeply with clients on a range of levels to facilitate significant sustainable behavioural and attitudinal change.
Neuroscientific research show that mindfulness actually changes 're-wires' brain structure, improves immune system functioning and energy in just 8 weeks. It is the mental equivalent of going to the gym - you train your mind to be more fit and resilient, ready for when challenges come your way.
I offer a range of pathways to learn about mindfulness and mind training, including one to one & small group mindfulness therapy/coaching and bespoke training for organisations. I am trained in offering Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (treatment of choice in the NHS NICE Guidelines), Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Mindful Self Compassion, Mindfulness Based Pain Management and Corporate Based Mind Training.
Coaching Psychology
“As a coach I help develop others by raising self-awareness, exploring meaning & purpose and encouraging experimentation to initiate change.”
If you are struggling with work pressures, facing change or feeling stuck you may benefit from a short programme of psychological coaching to help you gain new perspectives and successful coping strategies to re-balance, so as to be able to respond rather than react to such challenges.
Coaching also helps you to explore personal growth, develop your potential and move forward in your life – however good you are, you can get even better! Clients find coaching enables them to become more resilient, develop the ability to engage with greater challenges with confidence and skill, resulting in better results for their organisations and for themselves, thereby recouping their investment.
